Love Leads Us Home {following Christ to Calvary}, Day 7: Sunday Scripture & Song

In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. -John 1:4

The last recorded words of Jesus to Nicodemus, a great teacher and leader of the Jewish people, were these: But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God. (John 3:21)

And I have to think that Nicodemus and so many others who felt the guilt of falling short of the law would have cringed at this thought – perhaps, even, they would have been undone when they acknowledged that all of their actions were plainly seen by God.

But this was no decree of condemnation.

It was an invitation to freedom. For the Truth – the Light of the world – came so that we would have no more need to hide in the darkness, to be bound by regret and shame. He came to overcome the darkness – as only He could, in His holiness and power. In the light of His holiness, we see our sin plainly and realize our need for forgiveness…and in the power of His sacrifice on the cross, that sin is cast away from us – as far as the east is from the west. (Psalm 103:12)

No sacrifice on our part could have brought heart-transforming-righteousness…but Jesus’ words to Nicodemus explained a joy-full miracle – He had come, Himself, to save us.

The Father has qualified us (because we could not earn it ourselves!) to share in the inheritance of His holy people in the kingdom of light. “For He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves,  in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” (Col. 1:12)

May we remember His mercy and grace today…may we proclaim praise because we know the inside-out gladness of being set free from our darkness and brought into His marvelous light.

{I am so excited to continue our journey this week…we will remember how Jesus sought out those in darkness…how He sought out those in need…and brought His life-giving Light.}
